YMCA Water Fitness encourages people of all ages to use the buoyant qualities of water to enhance their physical fitness through exercises. Water can make some movements possible that would be very difficult on land. It's an ideal form of exercise for all ages and increases physical strength and endurance without putting stress and strain on joints, as in land-based exercise. Swimmers and nonswimmers alike can take part in this type of exercise to reduce emotional stress and tension, improve health and physical appearance, and encourage and improve feelings of well-being and self-esteem.

Another water fitness program is Active Older Adults Water Fitness. This functional fitness program is for active older adults who want to have a better life on land through exercise in the water. Instructors for this program learn about the aging process, exercise modifications, and functional fitness assessments.
